Check out the exciting events of the BRICKsters of 2013-2014.
BODIES AT LUXOR
BRICK at BODIES
After modeling and explaining the path of blood through the heart, testing respiratory capacity and many other activities, the BRICksters went to see how it all actually looks. The Bodies Exhibit at the Luxor is a wonderful way to culminate a unit on the human body. It is able to demonstrate how each system works independently, and with the other systems to make us function. It was a fascinating first trip for the 2013-2014 class. UNITE AGAINST BULLYING @ THOMAS & MACK
To culminate the Week of Respect, the BRICKsters joined thousands of other students to rally against bullying. In class we watched videos, wrote papers and read articles about bullying. The rally featured actors from the USA Network, WWE Superstars, Las Vegas performers and a concert from Carly Rae Jepsen! Check out the pictures above!
In celebration of Nevada Week 2013, the BRICKsters were able to travel to the Hoover Dam to learn about Nevada history, hydroelectricity, the Great Depression and so much more. Click on the image below to see the experience!
We prepared for this trip by reading about Leonardo da Vinci, then saw his ideas come to life. We classified and read about the types of rocks, then learned about the geologic history and traded earth material at the Nature Exchange. We saw how flash floods can be dangerous, met Mark Twain as a Nevadan, and took a train ride through history. Sprinkle in some chicken fingers and a lot more learning, and you have our awesome trip to Springs Preserve.
As one of our final learning experiences wrapped up, we ventured to the Clark County Wetlands area to explore the habitat of some of our desert friends. We then had a blast at the Nature Center as the students continued to get to know the desert around them.
LAS VEGAS RESCUE MISSION
After collecting, counting and sorting over 4,700 articles of clothing from the supportive students and families at Mendoza, the BRICKsters took the clothes from the school to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission where they were able to hand them out to those in need. It was a wonderful experience for the students for the holiday season. A HUGE THANK YOU to all those who helped and supported this clothing drive in so many ways! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

CHRISTMAS CAROL @ UNLV
Christmas Carol 2013
After reading the incredible classic by Charles Dickens, we watched the great Disney film starring Jim Carey, and even read two reader’s theater scripts for the story. We finally ventured to UNLV to watch the Nevada Conservatory Theater’s rendition of the play. We also took the time to tour the campus to keep the goal in mind- BRICKsters to COLLEGE!
CULTURAL CORRIDOR: LV HISTORY MUSEUM, NEON MUSEUM & OLD MORMON FORT
Traveling to three places in one day is tiring, but the BRICKsters learned so much about the city in which they live. From the dazzling lights of Las Vegas to the tombs of Egyptian kings, we had a fun-filled day with a great experience. Starting at the Neon Museum, we learned about everything Vegas from Howard Hughes to Boulder Dam. We then made the walk to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum to view dinosaurs, aquatic life and wildlife galleries. We ended the day at the Mormon Fort, the very first non-Native settlement in the Valley. Check out the gallery to join the fun.
OLD MORMON FORT
The last stop of our trip took us back to the 1850’s and the very first non-Native American settlement in Las Vegas. It was incredible to see the very first “BRICK” in Las Vegas as some of the original structures remain. It was a wonderful way to end an incredible day full of learning and enjoyment.
Who knew you could learn so much from signs? On this spectacular tour, the BRICKsters learned about the history of Las Vegas in such a unique way. From the strip to Boulder City, the history of one of the world’s more interesting cities was told through the neon signs that make it so famous. We were told of history about the Hoover Dam and Boulder City, famous residents such as Elvis and Howard Hughes, racial integration and architecture and so much more. We then were even treated to a read-aloud and some activities with the library. It was truly an amazing experience for all students.
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
On the second stop of a wonderful day, the BRICKsters learned about everything from Egypt and African habitats to geology and aquatic life. In between we saw animated dinosaurs and learned about the flora and fauna of Nevada.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY EVENTS
Through the years, we have developed a wonderful relationship with Las Vegas Academy, a magnet high school for the arts. They have treated us like superstars, and, in turn, the BRICKsters always look upon them as superstars, very eager to get an autograph or a snapshot of the actors. Through the years, we have had the pleasure to see them perform some of the books we love to read in class, such as Huck Finn and Of Mice and Men. We have seen them perform Shakespeare and musicals such as Oklahoma. Every night is filled with astonishment and inspiration. Every night is a night the BRICKsters never forget!
THE DINING ROOM
Catching dinner at Container Park, the students got to relax and have fun before heading to our second show at LVA this year. For the first time, the BRICKsters went to the Black Box theater to see the “The Dining Room.” During the show there were so many laughs, that tears began to flow. Another magical night for BRICK Academy.

OF MICE AND MEN
Of Mice and Men
A class favorite each year, John Steinbeck’s classic and timeless novel was performed beautifully on stage at Las Vegas Academy. A night filled with wonder, laughter and tears was capped off with a meet and greet of the cast, crew and staff. The BRICKsters were able to go up on stage and “hide in the brush” with Lennie and George, had a chance to pet Candy’s dog and try on Slim’s hat. A night of inspiration will not soon be forgotten. A HUGE THANK YOU TO LAS VEGAS ACADEMY for hosting us again!
Heading to Las Vegas Academy one more time, the BRICKsters saw the hilarious show Noises Off! Before the show, we went to Radio City Pizza downtown and met a former Rockette. We then relaxed at Container Park before heading to the show. It was really like a night on Broadway! Check out the pics of our wonderful evening.
RED ROCK CANYON
During a moderate climb up to the top of the Calico Tanks, the BRICKsters and their families enjoyed a lunch and spectacular view of the Las Vegas Valley area. Check out the pictures of our wonderful trip.

LAS VEGAS 51’s
After reading about an immigrant child from China who found strength and found herself through baseball and Jackie Robinson, we took a trip to see a game in action at Cashman field.
SKY ZONE CELEBRATION
After wrapping up the Las Vegas Reading Wranglers program, the students who completed all requirements used their Sky Zone pass to come jump around with their fellow BRICKsters at Sky Zone! A great time was had by all, with a day full of jumping, dodge ball, getting out of foam pits and lots of sweat. A great way to celebrate!
DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
A day of excitement was had by all as we traveled to the Smith Center for the second time to explore the Children’s Museum. With the new exhibit “Mind-Bender Mansion,” the brain’s of the BRICKsters were pushed to their limit as they solved some complex puzzles. Check out the photos to see all the fun.
LAS VEGAS PHILHARMONIC
We were able to sit front row for the Clark County School District concert. We heard pieces from Mozart, famous American musicals and much more.
